Types of Touchscreen Technologies

A curiosity such as a touch screen - a display with the ability to enter information by simply pressing on its surface with a special stylus or just a finger - has long ceased to surprise users of modern electronic gadgets. Let's explore out how it works.

There are many types of touch screens including the small form factor rugged touchscreen monitor solutions that Xenar Technolgies manufactures that work in the world's harshest of environments and is compatible with almost all industries. These many different types of monitors and touchscreens differ from each other in the methods of sensing touch. Among modern high-tech electronics, mainly resistive and capacitive sensors are applied. However, there are also matrix and projection-capacitive, using surface acoustic waves, infrared, and optical. The peculiarity of the first two, the most common ones, is that the sensor itself is separated from the display.

Resistive touchscreen consists of a flexible plastic membrane, which we press with a finger, and a glass panel. On the inner surface of the two panels, there is a resistive material - a conductor. Between the membrane and the glass, there is a micro-insulator. When we click on one of the sensor areas, the conductive layers of the membrane and the glass panel are closed at this point, and electrical contact occurs. The electronic controller circuit of the sensor converts the signal from pressing into specific coordinates on the display area and transfers them to the control circuit of the electronic device itself. The algorithm is very complicated and is based on the sequential calculation first of the vertical, and then the horizontal coordinate of the contact. Screens of this kind are reliable since they function normally even if the active top panel is dirty. If you need such a resistive touch screen that works properly under extreme conditions and meets all the latest standards, Xenarc Technologies’ products will satisfy all of your requirements.

Capacitive touchscreen. Functionality of this type of screen is based on any object having an electric capacity, in this case, a user's finger, conducting an alternating electric current. The sensor itself is a glass panel covered with a transparent resistive substance, which forms a conductive layer. An alternating current is fed to this layer utilizing electrodes. As soon as the finger or stylus touches one of the sensor areas, current leakage occurs at this point. Its strength depends on how close to the edge of the sensor the contact is made. A special controller measures the leakage current and, by its value, calculates the coordinates of the contact. The capacitive sensor, like the resistive one, is not affected by contamination; liquids are not dangerous to it. However, compared to resistive, it has higher transparency, which makes the image on display more clear and bright. Taking into account all of the above, Xenarc Technologies Corp. is engaged in the production of monitors with such screens, to present to market precisely the products that meet the requirements of customers. Xenarc monitors are suitable for operation at extremely low or high temperatures and are also used in various spheres where reliable equipment is required. For example, in the military, marine, and medical applications, in gaming, tracking and much more.

Since the touch screens are used with LCD and AMOLED displays, it would be beneficial to also discuss them.

AMOLED touch screens - active matrix on organic light-emitting diodes. This technology uses these diodes as a source for constructing images on the surface of the active matrix, and thin-film transistors, which control these LEDs. If simplified as much as possible, AMOLED technology is a layered cake, the bottom layer of which is an active matrix. Then follows a layer of organic light-emitting diodes and a layer of control transistors. For each LED, there is a personal transistor, which, changing the electrical potential, causes the LED to change the color spectrum and saturation. This principle allows achievement of high definition and contrast pictures.

LCD touch screens use a technology based on the use of special molecules called liquid crystals. These molecules have unique properties; they are always in a liquid state and can change their position when they are exposed to an electromagnetic field. Also, these molecules have optical features, similar to the properties of crystals.

Now you can decide what is more suitable for you. Whatever you choose, you can find it among the rugged products of Xenarc Technologies.
