What are IP69K Enclosure Characteristics:

  • Complete protection from dust, oil, industrial detergents, acidic/alkaline disinfectants, and seawater
  • Complete protection from contact with enclosed equipment
  • Protection from high temperature water, up to water projected by a high pressure nozzle against enclosure from any direction
  • Allows touchscreen monitors to withstand close range, high temperature and high pressure spray downs for sanitization
  • Rigid stainless steel enclosures that could withstand harsh detergents, acidic/alkaline disinfectants, and seawater
  • Satisfies the stringent sanitation requirements of food processing, beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical factories
  • A wide temperature range allows these displays to operate at temperatures down to -22F (-30C) and withstand temperatures up to 158F (70C), making them perfect for food processing applications where refrigeration or freezing is a must, or in marine and outdoor applications where marine spray or sub-freezing temperatures and direct sun exposure may make other displays unusable

What is Ingress Protection Rating Used For?

The Ingress Protection (IP) rating system is an internationally recognized scale that relates to proven protection against environmental factors such as liquids and solids.

Ingress protection ratings can be identified by the letters IP, followed by two numbers. These numbers define the amount of protection an item has against specified elements and its ability to resist foreign matter that could otherwise get inside the product and cause it to fail.  The first
number refers to the amount of protection an indicator enclosure has against solid matter (such as dust particles), while the second number defines the level of protection against liquids. The larger each digit is, the greater the protection.

What is IP69K?

The IP69K rating provides protection against ingress of dust and high temperature, high pressure water – making products with this certification ideal for use in conditions where equipment must be carefully sanitized. The IP69K Stainless Steel enclosure of our Brand New 2409 Series allows the
touchscreen and LCD monitor to withstand close range, high temperature and high pressure spray downs for sanitization, and rigid stainless steel enclosures that could withstand harsh detergents, acidic/alkaline disinfectants, and seawater.

These Xenarc displays will satisfy the stringent sanitation requirements of food processing, beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical factories.  A wide temperature range allows these displays to operate at temperatures down to -22F (-30C) and withstand temperatures up to 158F (70C), making them perfect for food processing applications where
refrigeration or freezing is a must, or in marine and outdoor applications where marine spray or sub-freezing temperatures and direct sun exposure may make other displays unusable.

The letter K is specified in DIN 40050-9, and not in IEC 60529.

IP ratings with the letter “K” (IP69K typically) are most prominent in food processing industries or industries where a high level of hygiene and cleanliness is paramount. IP69K provides protection against dust, high temperature, chemicals, and high pressure water.

Enclosures with this rating withstand a rigorous high pressure wash-down procedure. This particular water intrusion test involves placing the product on a turntable with a rotational speed of 5 ±1 revolutions per minute. The IP69K display is then sprayed at close range at a rate of approximately 4 gallons per minute with water pressure of between 1160-1450 psi, at a
temperature of 176°F (80°C). The nozzle from which the water is sprayed is held between 4 and 6 inches from the product enclosure at a variety of angles.

An additional digit, often an additional letter, indicates other protections the enclosure has:

  • D - Wire
  • F - Oil Resistant
  • H - High Voltage
  • M - Device Moving During Water Test
  • S - Device Standing Still During Water Test
  • W - Weather Conditions

What are the advantages of an IP69K Grade Touchscreen Monitor Solution?
In environments that require heavy washdown, such as in the food processing industry, the combination of water, chemicals, high pressures and temperatures can prove fatal for electronic circuits and instrumentation.

The IP69K rating offers complete assurance that a piece of equipment that has undergone these tests is both durable and resistant, and conforms to the highest protection rating on the scale.

How does a rugged LCD touchscreen monitor achieve the IP69K rating? Products bearing the IP69K rating undergo a challenging set of tests to ensure that they offer protection against penetration of high pressure, high temperature water and dust.

How is the water intrusion test performed?
The water intrusion tests themselves are done by placing the product on a turntable with a rotational speed of 5 ±1 revolutions per minute. The product is then sprayed at close range at a rate of approximately 4 gallons/16 liters per minute with water pressure of between 1160-1450 psi, at a temperature of 176°F/80°C.

The nozzle from which the water is sprayed is held between 4 and 6 inches from the product, at a variety of angles. Following this rigorous testing procedure, the product is deemed as having successfully achieved the rating if it completely resists water ingress.

What is the difference between IP65, IP66, IP67, IP68 & IP69K?
The differences between IP65, IP67, IP68 & IP69K certified displays from Xenarc Technologies are slight, but very important. Using the above chart as a guide, we can see that all of these touchscreen and LCD monitors are protected at the highest level from solids and dust. The variations come with the protection against liquids.

IP65 = Water resistant. “Protected against water jets from any angle” *Do NOT submerge IP65 touchscreens and LCD Monitors, as these are not fully waterproof.

IP67 = Water Proof. “Protected against the events of temporary/long term submersion (10 minutes or more)”*You can submerge IP67 displays for extended periods; our IP67 rated touchscreen and LCD monitor solutions can be submerged and come with IP67 rated power cords and connectors.

IP68 = Waterproof. “Protected against the events of permanent submersion up to 3 meters”

IP69K = The highest rating possibly achieved is IP69K. This superior IP rating suggests complete protection from dust and protection from steam-jet cleaning (water temperatures of -22F (-30C) to 158F (70C)). Some regulations, including IEC 60529, refer to the testing of IP69K as IPx9.

What IP Rating Will You Need?

If you don’t anticipate a harsh environment that is extremely dusty or wet then a lower IP rating would suffice.

Applications that involve a lot of dust, debris, or potential to be in contact with any solids or liquids will require IP ratings that are higher and adequate water resistance on the touchscreen or LCD monitor utilized.

Examples of IP Ratings and Uses

Low IP ratings are appropriate for:

- Indoor use
- Protected use inside sealed products
- Inside sealed signage
- When using aluminum extrusions

High IP ratings are appropriate for:

- Unsealed outdoor locations
- Places that have a lot of debris
- Areas with heavy foot traffic
- High splash areas
- High contact areas (people touching them)
- Wet locations

Why do our Ingress Protection (IP) touchscreen monitor solutions outlast others in extreme conditions? Why do our rugged touchscreen and LCD monitors have a wider temperature range and a wider voltage input range? It is because our mission is to offer engineers, automators and system integrators the best products for any situation.
